JUNEAU - Alaska has the distinction of ranking number one in the nation per capita for avalanche-related fatalities. In a state covered by snow more than half the year, learning basic, practical skills for traveling safely in avalanche terrain is vital.
Last winter, Alaska lost five lives in avalanche related accidents. Teaming up with other avalanche education programs, the North American Outdoor Institute is hoping to help change those statistics this year.
With support from the Alaska Division of Parks, SnowTrac, the Alaska Department of Public Safety, and BRP/Skidoo, a host of free avalanche and snowmobile safety courses will be held around the state.
From Ketchikan to Kenai, more than two dozen classes are currently scheduled. The Alaska Avalanche Information Center and Alaska Avalanche School also offer a full menu of three- and four-day Avalanche courses.
