AWARE names teen art winners

In recognition of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE) Inc. has announced the winners of its arts and media scholarship contest:

• 1st: Sabrina Meredith, recipient of a $150 scholarship

• 2nd: Brita Fagerstrom, recipient of a $100 scholarship

• 3rd: Elizabeth Rumfelt, recipient of a $50 scholarship

Juneau teens between the ages of 14 and 19 were invited to create art and media that demonstrated positive and healthy relationships.

The work by all participants was included in AWARE's First Friday Gallery Walk event on April 4 and joined the art of survivors, artists, and community members to honor and celebrate healing from sexual violence created during Healing Arts workshops throughout March.

The event was judged by community members: Toren Ulrikson of Big Brothers Big Sisters Alaska, Cori Stennett of Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest, and Doug Blanc of Community in Schools.

The Healing Arts exhibit will be on display at the Silverbow Backroom (120 2nd Street) through the month of April.
